YELLOW!

I wore this to brunch last Sunday (Mother's Day). It was such a beautiful day, I had to bust out this bright yellow dress and kimono. The dress is something I picked up while shopping in the states last weekend and the kimono is a steal from H&M. The shoes I thrifted last winter. I love the chunky heel and they're super comfortable, I couldn't pass them up. This was my first time wearing my treasure chest purse out and it was so much fun to bring around. It's unique and I feel like it makes my outfit extra special.

I've been basking in this amazing weather and getting outside any chance I get. How have you been celebrating this sunshine?

Knits for Spring?

As you may have heard from us Canadians, winter just isn't seeming to go away any time soon. We had about a week of sunshine and +3s and now we're back to mountains of snow and -10c. This sweater dress has been a true comfort all season. I bought it at the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show for $25 (haggled from $40) since it had a stain on it. Lucky for me, the stain did come out and I know I didn't waste my money. I get so many compliments on it and it's one of my most comfy ensembles. I feel weird if I don't wear red lip stick with it so I always do. I wore this for a day of shopping with Rosie. Speaking of shopping, the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show is back April 13 at the Convention Centre and you KNOW I'll be there! If you live in the area, I encourage you to come check it out!

Dress: Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show, $25. Purse: Value Village, $6. Necklace: Material Girl, $10. Boots: Forever 21, $25. Rings: Value Village, $4. The Bay, $8.

Winter Dressing Circus

Winter is always a difficult time to dress. In trying to keep warm, you have to layer up. You can't just wear a simple outfit. There has to be the base layer, and the base layer has to go with the rest of the layers. And on top of that, you have to wear a big bulky coat and sometimes a hat, scarf, and leather gloves. It really is a challenge trying to make this whole dressing circus work in my favour 7 days a week but this is the season where my many blazers come in handy. Everyday for work I generally wear either a skirt and sometimes pants, paired with either a blouse or t-shirt and topped with some type of blazer. I wear the same coat and almost the same boots everyday and some combination of hat and scarf.

The dressing ordeal is one of the reasons I hate winter. I just feel heavy and cold and hot and wet all at the same time and it's not pretty. While there's not much I can do to sway Canada into warmer weather, I can choose to dress wisely and try to smile through it. If you're not sure what to wear in below digits weather, I'd suggest investing in a few key items:

  • warm coat (mines consignment, check thrift stores!)
  • Doc Martens (the only boot ever)
  • hats (H&M has some cute ones)
  • scarves (thrift shops have the best)
  • leather gloves
  • insulated nylons (Mark's)
  • fleece-lined leggings or pants
Coat: Rikochet Resale $260 Skirt: gifted and thrifted, Sweater: H&M, thrifted, $6 Purse: Valentina, Winners, $26 Boots: Spring, $20 Glasses, Kenzo, clearlycontacts.com , Necklace: gifted

60s floral two-piece to go

I am head over heels in love with this vintage two-piece. When I saw it at Value Village, I instantly knew I had to have it. The print is unbelievable and the colours are so vibrant. Another great thing is they can be worn as separates or together when I'm feeling more bold. I wore this outfit to work on Saturday and to the mall to visit the new H&M with my friends. I didn't buy much at H&M since it's only been open a few days and we've been waiting to get one here forever, hence it was picked over by now but I did find an amazing toque (see it on my next post!) and a black faux-snakeskin belt. They really do have great, inexpensive accessories and I was very pleased with the size of the store, it's pretty big. Well worth the wait.
Shirt and skirt: Value Village, $10 together. Black top: Jones New York, Rikochet Resale, $25. Purse: Ragtime, $18. Boots: Dr. Martens, gifted. Necklace: Forever 21, $12

Wear polka dots, docs orders

This is what I wore to work today. I don't think I've actually ever shown you a proper work outfit since I'm generally busy before and after work, and when I get home I tend to immediately change into cozies. Today I had to run to the grocery store right after work to grab a few things for my pumpkin curry so I decided to capture my outfit.

It's getting so cold outside, I had to pull out the ear muffs and docs today. I also got to wear one of my all time favourite leather jackets. When I saw this jacket at Value Village, it was in the small section and I literally wasn't even going to bother until my sister insisted I at least try it on. And thank goodness I did. I guess it's supposed to fit oversize on a size small person because it fit me. I simply adore the polka dots and have never seen that pattern on leather before. My scarf was a last minute addition and pulled the outfit together.

What pieces are you enjoying before the snow hits?

Leather jacket: Sally. B., Value Village, $20, Shirt: American Apparel, Salvation Army, $6 Scarf/Tie: Value Village, $3, Pants: Joe Fresh, Value Village, $6, Backpack: Cargo Montreal, Bentley, $30 Boots: Dr. Martens, gifted Ear muffs: Chinatown Toronto shop, $5 Belt: Zara, (came with another pair of pants).

Pea Soup - White Fur

This past week the weather in Ottawa has been quite warm. I think mother nature wanted to give us one last taste of heat before we get buried in snow and ice this winter. As you can tell, I'm one of those bitter that winter is coming people.
I wore this out for dinner, a thrifting trip and to see Gravity in theatres. My thrifting trip went very well. Fall is my favourite season for thrift shopping for a few reasons. One being more selection for blazers, sweaters, boots and coats and two: the weird clothes that I assume were reserved for halloween come out aka my day-to day-clothing. Seriously the halloween section is my new favourite. It seems like they stock pile cool clothes throughout September that they put out in October for halloween costumes. The halloween rack is full of sequins, leopard print, leather, and vintage clothes - basically all of my favourites. I'll be filming a thrift haul video soon to show you everything I bought!
All I have to say about Gravity is that you need to see it. There are only two characters and the entire thing is set in space yet I sat at the edge of my chair, completely blown away by how insane and well done it was. Watch the trailer.
Hat and Necklace: inherited from Grandma, Purse: Value Village, $3, Vest: Winners, $26, Top: Joe Fresh, $6, Jeans: Joe Fresh, $15, Flatforms: Joe Fresh, $10, Lipstick: Covergirl Lip Perfection in Enchantress.

Mental Health

This past month has been an absolute roller coaster. I moved out on August 1 with my twin sister and two weeks ago, my grandma suffered a heart attack (she's getting better now).  My mental and physical health have definitely been tested these past few weeks and I have to say with the support of family, friends, and a lot of coffee, I've managed to stay pretty positive. With all of that, my blog was put on the back burner. While I've had no time to post, I'm happy to announce that I'm getting back into the groove.

Today I am introducing the topic of mental health to my blog.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, nurse, or psychiatrist of any sort. I am simply speaking to my experience working in the mental health field (as a communications assistant) and from life experience with family members and friends who have a mental illness. Please accept my blog posts simply as opinion pieces rather than medical advice. If you have a mental health concern, I urge you to speak to someone about it. To learn more about mental health, visit: www.ementalhealth.ca.

As you can probably tell, fashion is a big passion of mine. I love the way clothes help me to feel confident, beautiful and unique. I believe that clothes and fashion are a part of who I am and are a way of expressing my personality and creativity. I strongly believe that how you feel on the outside is linked to how you feel on the inside and vice-versa. Feeling beautiful and loving the way I look certainly helps me to feel confident on the inside. Just like everyone else, I don't always love my outfit or my size or how my hair looks but I try my best to love myself no matter what. Feeling happy and confident reflects how we see ourselves. This is why our mental health is so important: it affects more than just the brain.

Mental health is something I'm very passionate about. This passion, however, is not fueled by fur or sequins but by experience. I've witnessed a number of family members and friends struggle with mental illness as well as heard the stories of many others. While a mental illness can be treated and symptoms can be managed, a lot of people who struggle with mental illness say the stigma attached to it is worse than the illness itself. This just makes me mad. It's hard enough having any illness without feeling scared or ashamed to talk about it and get help. I think the stigma associated with mental illness comes from many things, one being the fact that it deals with emotions and emotions are often tied to personality traits and characteristics of people. And while a mental illness can sometimes, and often times, be misunderstood as having bad character traits or personality flaws, it's important to remember that a mental illness is just that: an illness. And a mental illness is hard enough without having to deal with the judgement of others. My experience living with family who has a mental illness is where my passion to get involved came about.

From seeing the way a mental illness affects day-to-day life plus having to deal with the stigma, I've become very passionate about promoting awareness, reducing stigma as well as being a lot more understanding as a person. The stigma really fires me up and makes me mad but I've managed to turn my anger into a drive to create change.

I've wanted to introduce this topic with you for a while now yet couldn't figure out how to introduce the topic of mental health into a fashion blog. However, I knew I had to find a way as mental health is literally as big (if not bigger) part of my life as fashion. As I got to thinking, I realized that fashion and mental health are connected; it's the connection between physical health and mental health. Feeling stressed, upset, or anxious can be emotionally and physically draining. And low energy leads to less motivation to take care of your physical health, and in turn a reduced level of confidence. When you dislike how you look, it can affect how you feel. I want to explore the two topics together and hopefully give you some insight into mental health and why it's so important to take good care of your mind. I also want let you know that you're strong, you're beautiful and you matter.

Blend in.

I usually like to stand out a little, fashion-wise. I don't think I succeeded in front of this wall but it was too beautiful to not take pictures in front of. I drive by it all the time and have always wanted to take pictures of it but never found myself in the Glebe and on foot. I went thrifting with my sister Lisa and friend Jill. While trying to find a spot to grab dinner, I saw the wall! I had to take some pictures with it.

Got any beautiful murals in your city? Please share.

Lucky Skirt & Ottawa Woman

I wore this outfit to my friend's birthday outing to Babylon for Shameless, a night where they play guilty pleasures from the 90s. I found this skirt at Value Village and didn't even know if it fit me before buying because I was in a rush (which I don't recommend doing). As you can see, luckily it fit me and I paired it with a plain tank-top and wedge sandals.

I hope you're all enjoying the beginning of summer. It doesn't quite feel like summer here in Ottawa yet but I have hopes that it is on it's way. And while the weather has been gloomy, I've been keeping dry inside, writing for my new column Woman About Town in Ottawa Woman newspaper- a paper that celebrates the achievements of women. For my first article, I wrote about a lovely new coffee and bakeshop in town called Three Sisters. If you live in Ottawa and like friendly people and good food, I suggest a visit. You can read my article on page 9 of the issue.

Bike Love

Meet my new bike. I haven't named it yet because it's currently being painted purple and is awaiting it's basket and bell so stay tuned for the name. I had been searching for a bike for over a year now but had such trouble finding a vintage bike that had speeds and power brakes that wasn't more than $100.

Until I drove by this baby. It was PERFECT. Minus the green colour and tacky stickers. As you can tell, I was very excited about my new ride and I am so anxiously awaiting to see it in purple and all dolled up. I've always loved biking from when I was a kid and it's great exercise.

My outfit is super casual and quite patriotic I must say (if I lived in America, that is.) I love the vintage Ralph Lauren t-shirt, it's so classic and comfy. The pants are a work staple but they're so comfortable that I tend to wear them on weekends too. Stay tuned to see this bike much more this summer!
