SLOW FASHION
IS IMPORTANT:
HOW I'M LEARNING
TO CHANGE

Being that this is a fashion-based blog, you may notice I almost never talk about fashion designers anymore. I used to be up to date with the latest runway shows, designer houses, and trends. Just the other day I found a Vogue magazine in a box with post it notes. Post it notes.

Now, I just have my favourite(s). Vivienne Westwood has always had my heart. I've been following her for years now and she once said something that stuck with me. When she coined the phrase buy less, choose well, and make it last it was quite controversial — and rightfully so. A fashion designer, who sells clothes for a living, is telling everyone to buy LESS? Yes. Yes, she is. As a public relations professional and raging fan, this intrigued me. I love a rebel. I love people who stir the pot.

And while I was intrigued, I also couldn't relate. Yes, it's easy for someone with a lot of money to say choose well — as in buy something of better quality with a bigger price tag — and keep it forever. But this isn't realistic for most people. I think she is encouraging people to save their money, over a period of time that varies to everyone, and purchase something of higher quality and design that will be more sustainable than fast fashion. If this is possible for you, I'd encourage this too. For the rest of us though, I've taken a deeper message from this.

I think we can all agree; As humans on this earth, who depend on the sustainability of the environment to live, it is in our best interest to respect the earth, for ourselves and for the new generation. It begs the question(s).

How can everyone make better buying decisions?
How can all of us reduce the amount of clothes that end up in landfills

There are many solutions. I've been following and intrigued by Fashion Revolution for a while now. Their mission is to unite people and organisations to work together towards radically changing the way our clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, so that our clothing is made in a safe, clean and fair way. They believe in a fashion industry that values people, the environment, creativity and profit in equal measure. And I do too.

So, how do we buy less, choose well, and make it last?

BUY LESS.

I used to frequent the thrift store a few times per week. I would buy anything I relatively liked. I had so many clothes but nothing to wear. Mostly because I couldn't see what I had. My room smelled of eau de thrift-shop-musk. My closet rail snapped.

Now, I go thrifting every few months. I also strict-thrift. I'm very, very picky about what I buy. I put a lot of thought and fully inspect the items. I've changed so much and now I don't see the point in buying things just to buy them and sit in my room enjoying free rent. I've also become very aware of what materials my clothes are made of so if I don't love the way they feel, they're an automatic no.

I found this video really helpful in resisting the urge to shop. My friend and local sustainable fashion blogger Alyssa shares her tips for shopping your closet when you'd rather be at the mall. Especially after scrolling through Instagram or fashion blogs and wanting to shop the trends. I understand the need to feel current and stylish but it doesn't have to be a barrier to buying less.

CHOOSE WELL

I'm not saying don't shop. Shopping is one of my favourite things to do and gives me great joy. Bliss, even. I do believe in choosing well, though. Vintage shops, pop-ups and flea markets are the best place to practice this. All of my favourite pieces are vintage. They are SPECIAL. Since they tend to be a little pricier and more eccentric than pieces I find in the thrift store, I take my sweet time deciding to buy or not. When you shop vintage, you're not only getting a piece that is of higher quality materials (generally!) but you're also re-purposing a piece that may have otherwise ended up in a landfill before it's time. Plus, you're supporting local small businesses and entrepreneurs.

If you're in Ottawa, here are two awesome vintage clothing sales coming up:

Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show — this weekend!

Ottawa Vintage Pop Up Shop — November 18 (shop mine and Rosie's closet!)

MAKE IT LAST

Consider what you already have in your closet. Is there something you forgot you had? Is there a blouse that is just missing a button? Is there a pair of jeans that could use some distressing or patches?

Think of your clothes as people. We need daily maintenance, upkeep and fixing up. We change our nail colour, get hair cuts, and wear different glasses. Your clothes sometimes just need a little makeover. And it can be fun! Make a night of it with friends where you bring a few pieces from your wardrobe and alter them in some way. Share and exchange patches, lace trim, buttons, you name it! And share skills, too.

Learning the basics of sewing can be the difference between fixing up a garment or having to buy a new one, and have to throw away the old one, adding it to the landfill, etc. Another way to make it last is to do a clothing swap. Look out for swap events in your city or organize your own with friends and coworkers.

Sustainable fashion needs to be inclusive, respectful, and simple. I truly believe we have the power within us to help our mother earth and each other by the actions we take.

It has to start here, now, small, with you, with me.

A Celebration of Style: Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show Spring 2016

Last weekend I put on my best chesterfield garment and accessories to attend the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show Celebration of Style. I'm not sure I can personally say it's really about the shopping for me anymore. I've lost count of how many times I've attended this show, which gathers vintage vendors from all over to pop-up shop sell their best stuff. Over the years, I've made friends with the vendors and frequent shoppers. Nowadays when I attend, it feels like a vintage family reunion rather than a shopping trip.

Vintage Love + GIVEAWAY

Vintage is my thing. I'm an old soul who just adores the look, feel, and smell of vintage clothing and accessories. They have so much charm, class, and decadence. Vintage shopping gives me such a thrill and my favourite time of year is approaching once again!

I've said this before but it rings true. The Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show is like Christmas for me. Yes, it's an opportunity to shop from vintage stores across the nation and have the best selection from each store. BUT it's also a huge celebration of style. STYLE. Not fashion.
Style is an attitude. An air. A feeling. People with style don't just simply get dressed. They dress UP. Their outfit isn't just about the fabrics they put on their body but the attitude and confidence they carry them with. When I get dressed, something happens inside. I feel giddy, happy, and free. My outfit carries me and I carry it. We marry into a beautiful relationship.

Before this turns into a love story, I'll get to the real meat of this post. I want to send YOU to the Vintage Show FO FREE so you can use your valuable coins towards something SPECIAL!

To enter:

  • make sure you're able to attend the show on Sunday, April 10 from 10am - 5pm in Ottawa, Canada
  • like the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show
  • like The Fashion Kidd
  • leave a comment on one of my Facebook page posts telling me what you LOVE about vintage
Two winners will be randomly selected on Friday, April 1st and will be notified via Facebook comment. Each winner will receive two tickets to the show. Your tickets can be picked up at the show (front entrance).

If you plan on attending the show, make sure to follow and tag @ottawavintageclothingshow and @laurakidd on Instagram so we can see what you wear / pick up! I would LOVE to meet you there so don't be shy!

Here's a taste of what you'll see at the show, from my photo archives:

Night Bright

Sweet and sour. Bright with subdued. Darks with brights.

We've been seeing these trends float around for some time now but for me, they never get old. Colourful clothes make me so happy. There's always a way of re-inventing yourself by mixing and matching different colours and patterns. I find that when I wear bright colours, I not only lift my own spirits but I notice it affecting the people I see throughout the day. Especially during Winter in my city. It's grey, white, slushy, messy. So I think a bright outfit ~and lip~ is refreshing to see.

I wore this out with my gal pals for my very first Galentine's Day. I've been a single lady for almost six months now. It's been a journey of mending a broken heart mixed with self love and discovery. I go through phases of feeling sad, happy, lonely, and free. I was actually looking forward to spending time with my best friends this Valentine's Day. It's a day to celebrate love, whatever that may look like. I've been trying to find love in all of the non-traditional ways. In learning to love myself and others to my greatest capacity, I find my loneliness subsides and my heart opens to new possibilities. So cheers to that!

Embracing Canadian Winter

My hands are quite icy while writing this post! Winter is in full swing and this is about the time I'd usually pull out my long list of complaints. I'm choosing not to be that person, at least if I can help it! Complaining is such a natural tendency when something isn't ideal but I'm trying to challenge my urges so I can have a more peaceful mind about it. I mean, I do live in Canada, it's about time I begin embracing all that it is - flaws and all. Maybe Winter isn't so bad. Yes it's cold, but there are worse things.

Learning to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations is something I've been trying to hone lately. If we know that what we focus on grows, why do we sometimes tend to focus on only the bad? Or cold, in my instance. When I'm in an uncomfortable situation, I've been trying to raise the little voice in my head that has the power to say "you know what, this is not pleasant, but that's ok." Even something as simple as that actually makes me feel better about it. And since what we focus on grows, I'm going to focus on palm trees and sand. I'll let you know if I end up on a beach!

I'm starting my Kundalini yoga teacher training this weekend. I'm sooo excited to embark on what I imagine will be an incredible journey. And I'm taking you with me. I'm going to be blogging about my yogi adventures! Maybe that's what I'll call it: Yogi Adventures

So, here is me embracing Winter. Fashion definitely helps!

Speaking of fashion, another way to embrace Winter is to force yourself out of the house, put some lipstick on, and head to an event in your city. I'm really looking forward to Capital Catwalk on January 30. Ottawa doesn't host too many fashion shows so when one occurs, I'm on it! If you're in Ottawa or even Montreal, it will definitely be worth the drive. Get your tickets here.

Shine Bright

First post of 2016.

I've been feeling really good these past few weeks. A bit invincible but maybe just more like myself. I've been on a journey of doing what I love and following my heart. I've been making space in my mind to let my inner light shine. In other words, I've been 'taking out the trash' in my mind and making room for my truest self to come through. This will help me become my greatest version. After all, this is why I'm here. To be the best me.

I'm starting this year on a deeper note because I want to connect with you on a more personal level. Of course, my posts will always be fashion inspired, but I wanted to make the writing portion of my posts more real. Less talk about what I'm wearing and the weather.

I'm too excited for what this year will bring. I haven't set any resolutions in stone because I'm going to continue to listen to what my heart says and embrace it all - the good, the magical, the messy, and the sometimes uncomfortable. I trust in my most authentic self.

This month, I'm beginning a self mastery course (Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training) for the next six months. I'm doing this for me. To strengthen my yoga practice and better my relationship with myself. I also want to share what I learn in hopes that it will help others like it has helped me. Let's just say I don't know how I functioned before knowing what Kundalini yoga is.

I wish you love and happiness and light in 2016, and always.

Vintage Pink Coat OOTD and Merry Christmas Eve-Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve-Eve!

I wore this last weekend to do a bit of shopping and then to go out for Rosie's birthday. I've been loving this super mild winter weather this year. I get to wear all my lighter, thrifted coats and boots. I'm trying to milk it before the real winter hits. I've been obsessed with these faux leather leggings. I have a hard time finding pants that fit well, mostly due to my booty-waist ratio that doesn't fit the standard size. But leggings. Leggings always fit me well because they just snap to the curves. I also bought them in navy.

Tell me, how are you? I know this is such a busy month for everyone so I do hope you find some relief this week and time to relax. Rest is so important. Remember that you can't pour from an empty cup. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

I wish you the happiest holidays!

Greenhouse x Mom Jeans Vibes

As a self-proclaimed plant lady, you'll understand my excitement in visiting a greenhouse. Plants and flowers are fascinating. It's so cool how they're alive and breathing, how they grow and evolve.

I'm lucky to live very close to an array of greenhouses and have always wanted to shoot near them. The lighting was perfect on this day, light and bright but soft.

I wore this to check out the greenhouses and then for an afternoon coffee and cookie with my sister. Funnily, we went to Blumenstudio which is a floral and coffee shop. It was a flowery day.
