FLORIDA LOOKS

A WELL HELLO THERE!

I think this has been the longest break from blogging I've ever taken. And I promise it was not on purpose. I literally have so much content but lacked the time to curate it.

Quick update before I tell you all about my vacation! I finished my Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training course in early June. Yay! I am now leading early morning yoga and meditation every Wednesday at Shunnya in Ottawa. I am planning a post all about that experience and I have so much to share with you so stay tuned for that! That occupied much of June. The second half was spent relaxing in the sunshine state of Florida. And with Mickey. He's my man.

Which, in a nutshell, leads me to where I am now. Finally home and sorting things out. Getting back into the groove. I also have plans for a blog makeover in the hopefully near future. It has been on my mind for a while so I am hoping to set aside some time soon to work on that.

REBEL ON THE RUNWAY

One of the first things that interested me in fashion is the runway. I used to watch Fashion Television with Jeanne Beker and the fashion shows were always the highlight for me. The runway is where it all goes down. I soon realized that some designers blend in and others fight very hard to stand out. Some choose to simply make nice clothes and others choose to make clothes that say something.

I've never really ever pictured myself walking in a fashion show. I used to think I was too short, not pretty enough, and would simply never get the opportunity. I'm a PR girl. I've helped promote fashion shows in the past. I've been back stage. I've been a guest at shows. I never thought I'd be the one walking down the runway.

Until now.

A few months ago, local designer Kristie Lance discovered me through my blog and asked if I could model in her upcoming show at Runway for Hope. It would be the first ever full curvy line to be shown on a runway in my city.

I checked out her website and soon realized that she is special. It honestly took me a few minutes to get over the initial shock. Me? Model? I then jumped at the opportunity and graciously obliged. If I was going to be promoting a designer and wearing the clothes, I want to believe in the brand and the message behind it. And Kristie's brand has the ultimate message.

Rebellion. In fashion. In life. This was the theme for her latest collection. I couldn't believe in it more. I have always seen my sense of style as rebellious, care-free, and wild. She also caters to all body shapes and sizes which is so important to me.

A few weeks before the Runway for Hope show, I was also given the opportunity to walk in the upcoming National Women's Show, of which Kristie was chosen as the key runway show. In a matter of a few weeks, I was somehow booked to walk in two shows!

I was pretty nervous at first but once I met my fellow curve models at the first rehearsal, I was so so happy and excited. They were so supportive, uplifting, and welcoming to me as the rookie. They made the whole experience so fun.

It was really cool seeing the behind the scenes of a fashion show from a model perspective. From the hair and makeup to the chaos of getting dressed and lining up, it was quite an experience. It's a lot of wait wait wait GO GO GO! I loved the excitement of it.

I think I've always wanted to at least try walking down the runway. I would often (and still do) walk down a hall way and pretend it's a runway. The moment where my feet actually stepped foot on the stage and I was OUT THERE and walking was surreal. It all happens so fast and when I stepped off the runway in the first show, I was shaking with adrenaline. Such a rush!

These shows were so meaningful because of the message Kristie was sending. By having both straight and curvy models, short and tall, it shows that style has no limits. And that in a world that constantly tells us that we're not enough, we should be rebels in loving ourselves.

Thank you Kristie for having me in your shows.

Follow her rebellious adventures on Instagram and Facebook!

A Celebration of Style: Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show Spring 2016

Last weekend I put on my best chesterfield garment and accessories to attend the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show Celebration of Style. I'm not sure I can personally say it's really about the shopping for me anymore. I've lost count of how many times I've attended this show, which gathers vintage vendors from all over to pop-up shop sell their best stuff. Over the years, I've made friends with the vendors and frequent shoppers. Nowadays when I attend, it feels like a vintage family reunion rather than a shopping trip.

Multi-Coloured Sequins x Inspiration Awards

I am starting to believe less and less in coincidences. I feel like everything I've done and the people I've met have all played a role in my life or taught me something. I met someone last Spring who inspired me so much he literally brought me to tears. It was at a student-run mental health gala Masterpieces of the Mind and featured guest speakers and artists. One such speaker was Jayson. He told his story of living with mental illness following a car accident in high school. For years he struggled with living in fear and silence until he was able to get help. The most striking part of his story for me was hearing how he was able to change his family's mindset around mental illness. Since then, he's not only reduced stigma within his family but it's spread to his friends, school and community. He does so much to help others and contribute to this cause. I felt he was more than worthy of The Royal's Inspiration Award - Youth Category. And so I nominated him! And to his and my pleasant surprise, he was chosen! Watch his full story here
Ok so Jayson was definitely the star of the night but since this is a fashion blog, let's take a quick peak at my outfit. I bought this top over a year ago but hadn't found the right place to wear it. I couldn't believe what good condition it was in. I shop for sequins A LOT and this was by far the most perfect piece I've found. Doesn't it remind you of the Rainbow Fish colours? It was most fitting for this special evening. The sequins directed the rest of the outfit and so blue lipstick only felt right, ya know?

Yogi Adventures: Part 2 / February

Oh, Almonte. Where do I begin?

This was my second Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training weekend (in a series of six). We took a little field trip 45 minutes out of the city to spend four days in the small town of Almonte, Ontario. I had heard of it before but truly didn't understand just how special it is. It's the cutest little town! There are adorable shops, restaurants, bridges, waterfalls, and the kindest souls! All within just a few blocks of each other. I've always considered myself a city girl but I quite enjoyed my time here.

This weekend we had the honour of being taught by the most famous Kundalini teacher in the world, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa. She was joined her by husband and teacher partner, Gurushabd. They've been practicing yoga for 45 years and their wisdom is beyond anything I've ever seen before. When Gurmukh speaks, the room quiets. Her words are so intriguing. She must do yoga or something. Wink.

She owns the Golden Bridge Yoga Centre in New York and Santa Monica but also travels A LOT to India, Europe, Canada, and all over the world. If she happens to come somewhere near you, I'd encourage you to see her.

I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend four days with these incredible teachers, my teacher training family, and everyone in between. I want to specially shout-out to Christine (Kulmeet) for bringing everyone together and making this happen, it's truly her forte. This weekend had a profound effect on me. I came home feeling refreshed, inspired, and light. I felt like my priorities were straightened right out. Ha!

I had been feeling all wrapped up in my own mind about the things we all stress over: money, loneliness, FOMO, not having enough, wanting more, etc. But by the end of this weekend, I felt my heart was full and all my worries had shifted. I realized all that matters is love. To give, to help, to experience life's beauty, and to feel love.
The glow.

Night Bright

Sweet and sour. Bright with subdued. Darks with brights.

We've been seeing these trends float around for some time now but for me, they never get old. Colourful clothes make me so happy. There's always a way of re-inventing yourself by mixing and matching different colours and patterns. I find that when I wear bright colours, I not only lift my own spirits but I notice it affecting the people I see throughout the day. Especially during Winter in my city. It's grey, white, slushy, messy. So I think a bright outfit ~and lip~ is refreshing to see.

I wore this out with my gal pals for my very first Galentine's Day. I've been a single lady for almost six months now. It's been a journey of mending a broken heart mixed with self love and discovery. I go through phases of feeling sad, happy, lonely, and free. I was actually looking forward to spending time with my best friends this Valentine's Day. It's a day to celebrate love, whatever that may look like. I've been trying to find love in all of the non-traditional ways. In learning to love myself and others to my greatest capacity, I find my loneliness subsides and my heart opens to new possibilities. So cheers to that!

Capital Catwalk | Navy Suit

Fashion shows in Ottawa are so far and few between. So when one occurs, I try my very best to be there! Last weekend was the Capital Catwalk show, presented by Her Campus at the University of Ottawa, an online magazine. The show featured a range of local designers and boutiques. My favourite was Kristie Lance. Her designs reflect every woman, no matter the shape or size. I also love the designer herself. We met a few weeks ago at a fitting for her next show, which yours truly will be walking in! We share a love for vintage and thrifting and she showed me a few of her prized possessions. If you're in Ottawa and want to witness my city's first ever curvy runway show, you can get your tickets here
I threw this outfit together in a flash. I love suits. There's something so classy but sexy about them. To avoid looking too serious, I decided to wear a black lacy bra, a choker, and a bright orange purse.

Does anyone else feel like life has been a little bit crazy lately? I've been desperately craving some down time. While I love love love going out and seeing awesome people and being productive, I feel like I need to re-charge my batteries. Here's my game plan: I've done my yoga today and made a lovely breakfast. I'm going to go for a swim in a bit and I have a massage booked later. Me and my sister are going for Pho for dinner so we won't have to cook.

Mini yogi update: Even though it seems impossible some days, I have been keeping up with my homework. It takes about an hour or so every day. It's challenging to carve out the time that I don't really have but I do believe in MAKING time for priorities. And this is definitely a priority. I can already feel my brain changing and I notice it in the way I react (or don't react, rather) to things, how I communicate with people, and how I feel.

Wishing you a lovely weekend!

Vintage Pink Coat OOTD and Merry Christmas Eve-Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve-Eve!

I wore this last weekend to do a bit of shopping and then to go out for Rosie's birthday. I've been loving this super mild winter weather this year. I get to wear all my lighter, thrifted coats and boots. I'm trying to milk it before the real winter hits. I've been obsessed with these faux leather leggings. I have a hard time finding pants that fit well, mostly due to my booty-waist ratio that doesn't fit the standard size. But leggings. Leggings always fit me well because they just snap to the curves. I also bought them in navy.

Tell me, how are you? I know this is such a busy month for everyone so I do hope you find some relief this week and time to relax. Rest is so important. Remember that you can't pour from an empty cup. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.

I wish you the happiest holidays!

Greenhouse x Mom Jeans Vibes

As a self-proclaimed plant lady, you'll understand my excitement in visiting a greenhouse. Plants and flowers are fascinating. It's so cool how they're alive and breathing, how they grow and evolve.

I'm lucky to live very close to an array of greenhouses and have always wanted to shoot near them. The lighting was perfect on this day, light and bright but soft.

I wore this to check out the greenhouses and then for an afternoon coffee and cookie with my sister. Funnily, we went to Blumenstudio which is a floral and coffee shop. It was a flowery day.

Long coat, short hair

I chopped off all my hair! And I'm digging it. I came to the decision whilst flipping through old photos and realizing I've had the same variation of hair for the past five years. Since I've been in the spirit of change this year, I decided to just go for it! I've never been too attached to my hair and I'm pretty handy with turbans so I figured I couldn't go wrong. I'm so happy with the results and I'm having fun with it.

This outfit is one of a handful of my current winter uniforms. I switch between about five each season. I'm happy the bit of snow we got last week has already melted but unfortunately the cold stayed. I'm not complaining though since we've had such a mild winter so far.

This scarf is actually a piece of material I found at the thrift store. If you're looking for a big cozy scarf, don't forget to check the material section! You might need to cut it a bit or you might get lucky like me and it's the perfect size. Their material tends to be priced a bit lower than the scarves, too.

I'm still on the lookout for some awesome winter boots. I'm having trouble finding a new pair since most of the ones I see are either: 1) Too boring. 2) Not warm enough. 3) Too expensive. If you see any wicked ones, send them my way!

What are your winter uniform essentials?

Fall Week of Fun

The title really says it all! Welcome to my fall week of fun.

I took these a few weeks ago while on a hike in Gatineau Park. My sister had a week off from school at the end of October so we planned a whole week of fall fun! Fall is such a beautiful season but it's way too short. I've learned that you have to do the fall things quickly before the season is gone. Our week consisted of eating fall foods, watching spooky movies (Practical Magic and Hocus Pocus - can you tell we're 90s kids?), a trip to Saunder's Farm, and this here hike!

I made us a little activities calendar for the fridge and we actually got so excited about each day. It's fun having something to look forward to. I feel slightly guilty to admit this was only my second time in Gatineau Park. I live just 30 mins from this serene nature oasis but never get out there. I live in Ottawa but it's a half hour drive heading past downtown to enter the province of Quebec and the city of Gatineau, where this beautiful and might I add HUGE park is. It's basically a big hill with multiple different trails and parks. There's even a ski hill and lakes throughout the hill! We stopped in this adorable coffee shop on the way home to warm up. Good week!

Did you get a chance to do some fall activities before you blinked and it was over?

Coat: Thrifted, $5. Hat: H&M, $6. Jeans: Reitmans, $17. Boots: Dr. Martens, $180. Glasses: Clearly.ca. Backpack: Giant Tiger, $20.

Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show Fall 2015

You know how people get excited for Halloween or Christmas? Well, for me it's the Ottawa Vintage Clothing Show. It's my event of the year (except I get one in the Fall AND Spring!)

If you're new here, the show is where vintage vendors gather from all over to sell their best goods. It's a big vintage party!

It's not really even about the clothes but what the clothes do. They bring people together! The show connects all the vintage lovers and creative enthusiasts. Basically all of the weirdos come out to play and it's beautiful.

My outfit was inspired by this 70s dress I recently thrifted. The colours are a fall dream and I had all the accessories to match. I always love dressing up for the show and better yet, seeing what other people are wearing! I think this was the show's biggest season yet. It was super busy and there were so many vendors. Everyone seemed to be having a ball. Congratulations to all the organizers on an event well done!

Vest: Winners, $26. Dress: Vintage, Value Village, $10. Purse: Ragtime Vintage, $13. Boots: New Look, $30. Bangles: Aldo, Value Village, $3-6. Glasses: Clearly.ca

I met this stunning lady at the Spring 2015 Vintage Show. It was love at first sight. Joa is always so well dressed. Those words don't even describe it. She takes it to a whole other level. She's so inspiring to not only myself but to everyone she passed by at the show. She recycles old pieces and adds to new purchases and creates beautiful works of art. Her new motto is: We are all pieces of art in the gallery of life. Ha! Love it. We have the best conversations at this show!

Ok. Can we talk about these SHOES!? Sported by the beautiful Rosa, who says these are from Irregular Choice.

Sharona's Closet is one of my faves. She brings her personal vintage collection and always has a piece or two for me. Her style is totally 80s but her collection ranges from 50s to 90s. We love talking about vintage clothes and how the quality is unmatched to the clothing that's out today. I would say that's one of the best reasons for shopping vintage.

The Fashion Kidd x The Outfit Repeater Thrifted Clothing Swap

One of the reasons I started my blog was because I was so inspired by the blogs I followed. I feel like I'm friends with the people behind my favourite blogs. I've got to virtually meet so many cool people all around the world! While we may never meet in person, I still feel connected to their lives.

When I first started my blog, I often wondered whether anyone was visiting or enjoying my posts. I'm grateful to have family and friends who read my blog however, I can't explain how good it feels when a complete stranger does too.

Early in my blogging days, I came across the lovely Hannah Rupp of The Outfit Repeater, a self-proclaimed re-incarnation of an 80s valley girl (and I can vouch for that!). She was one of the first strangers to comment on my blog and now I truly feel like we're friends. She's hilarious and sassy but so kind and down-to-earth. We share a deep love for thrifting. Just when I begin to think I'm up on my thrift game, I visit Hannah's blog to be reminded of reality. Scroll to the bottom of her outfit posts and check out JUST how thrifty she is. I'm talking skirts for $1.50, shirts for $0.50! Definition of thrift right there.

Since we've been blogger buddies for a few years now, we decided to test out how well we knew each other's style and went thrifting for each other. It's like having a pen pal but you also get clothes! Hannah picked out this awesome blazer for me. I think she must've known that blazers are my favourite article of clothing ever. This paisley print is just so fall and can go with so many different things. The flowy material makes it a more casual piece but the print allows for me to dress it up or down. Thank you so much, Hannah, for sending me this. I'll love it forever not just because it's beautiful but because it came from you!

Shopping for Hannah was so effortless and fun for me! I was on the look out for something 80s and I found the perfect piece. I absolutely adore how she styled it! The piece and her hair are a match made in pink heaven. Head over to her blog to witness the magic!

Do yourself a favour and go check out her blog for some thrifty outfit inspiration. You also have to check out her YouTube channel because she's so funny! Actually just go follow all of her social media. You're welcome.

Blazer: You guessed it! Thanks Hannah. Shirt: Gifted. Skirt: Zara, $30. Shoes: Office, $120. Necklace: Grandma's. Coat: Glebe Garage Sale, $25.

The Fashion Kidd x Rogers Daytime TV

I was on TV this week!!

A little while ago I was given the opportunity to appear in a special bloggers edition of Rogers Daytime TV, a local Ottawa station. I went on the show with Rosie of Secondhand Rose since we both have a love for fashion and shopping. We shared our tips for shopping at vintage, thrift, and consignment stores and had so many laughs in between. This was my first time on LIVE tv so it was definitely nerve racking but once we got talking, it was a breeze. Special thanks to Marilou of 20YS for setting this up and being so fun to work with. We met back in 2011 at Ottawa Fashion Week and so we have an insider where we refer to each other as #OriginalLove, ha!

It was an experience I'll never forget and I hope I can go on again soon! I love sharing my passion for thrifting and having fun with clothes. You can view the clip here if you are a Rogers customer but if not, head to my Instagram to see some of the clips!

Let's chat briefly about my outfit. I wanted to wear something with colour and also be fun for TV! I think what I ended up choosing did just that and more. I felt confident and also loved that almost everything I wore was thrifted. You gotta practice what you preach!

Hey, that's my blog!

On set with our beautiful co-host Marilou Moles of 20YS! (see Derick Fage, our other host, in the pics below!) Thank you to both of them and Rogers TV for making this such a fun experience.
