Golden Milk

Before I get into this post, I want to thank you for the overwhelming love and support I received from my last post. Every comment and text and call I got meant so much. It was pretty terrifying to share that piece of me with you but I'm so glad I did. I know it's helped people to open up and talk about their mental health. I'm so grateful to be part of this growing conversation.

Onto this post! As you probably know, it's been a wild cold and flu season. Some are even calling it one of the worst in years. I had hoped to escape it but it hit me like a brick last Monday. I had chills and chest aches and headaches and general exhaustion. This is one tough flu, I warn you!

I had to take the week off work and while my energy is back, I am desperately wanting to just kick this! I remembered a tea that I learned about last spring called Golden Milk. It's made of turmeric, ginger, black pepper and honey. It's a natural way to treat colds, flus, congestion, headache and sore throat. It has strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, has been called a depression-fighter, and the list goes on. Basically, this shit is good for you so eat it!

In my efforts to kick this flu and have a productive tomorrow, I finally tried this recipe tonight. I can't quite describe the taste in words. If you expect it to taste like what it is ingredients-wise, you'll enjoy the taste. If you're expecting it to taste really good, I'll just be honest and say drop that expectation. Drink this milk for the benefits and you'll feel good about it.

There are tonnes of different recipes online but I used this one.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 tsp dried turmeric
  • 1 tsp dried ginger (I used half-inch fresh ginger)
  • sprinkle of black pepper
  • honey to taste

Heat the milk, add the turmeric and ginger, simmer 2 mins, add the black pepper, strain, add honey to taste. Eh voila!

England Part 6: Afternoon Tea & a Wedding

My last days in England were bitter sweet but full of excitement. They were spent shopping, eating carbs, having afternoon tea, and ended with one of the major reasons we traveled there in the first place: to see Jonathan's cousin Ben get married. I absolutely loved my outfit for the wedding. It was carefully crafted before I left and was pulled together with the help of friends. Rosie found me the skirt at The Bay and Aurelia let me borrow her sequin top. The two were a match made in heaven and I loved how everything looked together. The wedding itself was beautiful. The food was delicious and the live band rocked. I also got to meet a lot of Jonathan's relatives, who were super kind and welcoming. It's fun having conversations about the differences/similarities in our countries. The day after the wedding we all met up for lunch and then returned home to pack everything up. Getting all my purchases into my suitcase was challenging but I was pleasantly surprised when everything fit and was in the allotted weight. I already miss being there so much but am already planning (in my head) to go back.

How is September almost already done? The chilly air has arrived in Canada but only in the morning it seems. I keep reminding myself that this weather now is 100x better than Winter so I'm trying to be very grateful and soak up the sun before it's gonzo. How's your pre-fall?

CARBS.

CARBS FILLED WITH MORE CARBS. That meringue came home with me.

Proper afternoon tea. AH-MAZING.

Real scones, jam, and clotted cream. First time ever trying clotted cream, it was delish.
Because you needed a close up. You can blame me if you eat scones tonight.

Live band at tea. SO lovely.
Shirt: Borrowed from Aurelia (she got it at Urban Outfitters Renewal). Skirt: Lord & Taylor, The Bay, $29. Shoes: Spring: $22. Clutch: Primark, 8 pds. Headband/scrunchie: Ardene, $4.

Lovey.
This room was transformed two more times after the ceremony- so impressive! I love the look of it.

The Struggle

Winter is here. My migraines are tough. My car needs a repair. The bills need paying. My hairs acting weird. I got a pimple on my shoulder. My shoulder. And it's got me thinking. We're all struggling. Things don't always go right, people don't always impress, and pimples sometimes just appear in weird places. But we're all in this together. And there's another way of viewing your struggles.

I miss summer and my bike, Edith.

Winter is here, but the white trees look pretty in the morning (before it gets cold). My chronic migraines are tough but it's my body signalling me to slow down, and actually learn to relax for once. My hairs acting weird but it's nothing a turban can't fix. I did get a pimple on my shoulder but it will pass, and I'll happily hold the door open.

Knowing that we're all struggling together, and that every person has their own set of unique struggles they need to work through, is comforting. We all have ups and downs and we're all trying to figure out what works best for us, what gets us through the rough times and how to stay positive.

I'm not trying to say that the struggles of others makes me happier, rather the fact that we all have our own problems, makes me feel less alone within mine. I encourage you to never give up or lose hope in whatever you're facing because it does get better, and each one is a lesson.

While I know things like go take a walk, drink some tea, and think positive thoughts sound silly but trust me they do work in helping reduce stress and to feel better about situations (that could very well be much worse).

Here's a few things that are helping me get through my current struggles:

Talking with my close circle of friends, fam, and coworkers.

This youtube channel

Life of Pi.

Icepacks and Advil (for the migraines).

Red lipstick (for my self confidence).

Exercising (great at alleviating migraines).

Positive self-talk: you can do this, you're gonna have a good day, things will get better

Deep breathing. Inhale. Exhale.

Tea.

agreed.
